According to studies conducted by Yang, Lin and Tsay (2017) and Fan, Yang and Tsay (2018), tropical and sub-tropical countries have high energy consumption from air-conditioning systems, due to their hot and humid climates. The studies were conducted across Taiwan, Hong Kong and Singapore, using three energy saving standards of building envelopes to perform the evaluation: ENVLOAD (Taiwan), OTTV (Hong Kong) and ETTV (Singapore).

The studies showed that expanded metal mesh has become a popular shading device, demonstrating superior energy-saving properties compared to traditional materials (low-E glazing), providing a ‘cost-saving option in the value engineering process’.
